1st Liberty Federal Credit Union was founded by Robert "Scotty" Scott and
the co-founders: William Dawson, Joel
Taylor, Morgan Moyer, Billie Brankovich,
Ehud Markel, Kenneth Platt, and M.B.
Holt. In June of 1955 your Credit Union was chartered as Great Falls Air Force Base Federal Credit Union.
The Credit Union started with only 54 members in August of 1955 with just 10 loans.
We have continually grown and now have over 21,000 members with just over
$61 million in loans.
1st Liberty Federal Credit Union has undergone many name changes to fit our membership.
In February, 1956 our name changed to Malmstrom Air Force Base Federal Credit Union.
Then less than a year later in January, 1957 we shortened our name to Malmstrom Federal Credit Union
(MFCU).
During 1964 MFCU's Board of Directors discovered that we outgrew the facilities housing the Credit
Union during its first years. Up until then, the base library building served us very well, then on
July 11, 1964, Malmstrom Federal Credit Union moved to our current location 6200 3rd Ave N., right outside
the base main gate. With the new building came more room and more employees to better serve our growing membership.
The Board of Directors had the foresight to enlist the Architectural firm of Eugene D. Sternberg &
Associates to design the new building and
hired Le Roy O. Be Lote to build the
architect's vision. The Board of Directors consisted of:
Board President--Lt. Col. George V. Leffler, Major Robert E Bruskotter, Major Robert W. Niemeyer,
M Sgt. James L Cooke, Lt. Col. Karl F. Schmidt, S M Sgt. Harold A Donovan, M Sgt. Marvin E. Thompson,
CWO Lloyd W. Heggenberger, Captain Joseph L Vogel, Colonel Robert V. Whitlow, C M Sgt. Myron K. McClain,
Captain Richard E. Williamson, and M Sgt. Richard P McLagan
For almost 25 years 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union served the military and their family
members here in Great Falls, then in August, 1981 we assumed and merged with Grand Forks Air Force Base
Federal Credit Union.
On October 1, 1982 MFCU merged with Westside Federal Credit Union; which served the Great
Falls Westside community
and the Burlington Northern employees and dependents.
After 14 months we changed our name to better reflect our new vision and new members in the Great Falls and Grand Forks
communities. 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union became the new moniker representing our new vision, becoming
1st in all we do.
In 1991 we merged with Cut Bank Community Federal Credit Union giving us a presence in Chouteau
County. We took over the "Gas Station" branch and there we stayed until May,
2006 when the Credit Union opened up a brand new building with both a walk-up
ATM and a drive-up window.
Then in August of 1993 we expanded our presence to Glacier County Public Employee Federal Credit Union
bringing 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union and all of our services to the residents of the Browning
Reservation and Glacier County.
Being the 1st at everything we do was exemplified by
Stephen Kubick our CEO from 1990 to
2000.
Stephen saw the needs of the service men and women stationed in Montana, including Malmstrom Air Force Base,
Montana Army National Guard, Montana Air National Guard, and the
United State Reserves who were deployed overseas.
Operation Happy Holidays was created to send care packages to these brave men and women who were unable to be home
for the season. Since 1999 over 600 people have volunteered to send more than 3,000 care packages to our
Montana based service men and women. Operation Happy Holidays will continue to send care packages to
these brave men and women while they are stationed overseas during our time of conflict.
In 2000 the federal government deemed Montana to be underserved with Credit Unions, so on November 8, 2000
1st Liberty Federal Credit Union opened its membership to include all residents, workers,
students, and those who attend any
church located in the five counties of Cascade, Pondera, Teton, Chouteau, and Glacier.
During September 2002 one of our founders, Robert H.
Scott, was elected in to the Defense Credit Union
Hall of Honor. The award was presented to "Scotty" for "a leader, visionary, and patriot, whose untiring
efforts and endless support of the defense credit union movement and the Defense Credit Union Council epitomizes
the Counsel's value of philosophy".
Scotty was presented his award by
President/CEO Roland "Arty"
Arteaga at the D.C.U.C. Conference in
Reno, Nevada 2002.
1st Liberty Federal Credit Union listened to our members living in and around Conrad Montana.
They asked for a new building and that is exactly what we gave the community.
In March, 2003 1st
Liberty Federal Credit Union opened the doors to a state-of-the-art Credit
Union, complete with a walk-up ATM and a
drive-up window. The Conrad Branch lobby hours
are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon. - Fri., making us 1st to stay open later than any other
financial institution
in the area.
In August 2005, 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union was
awarded the Air Force Credit Union of
the Year Award for 2004.
This is an annual award given to the most valuable Credit Union serving Air Force
personnel and their dependents. 1st
Liberty Federal Credit Union beat out over
16 credit unions that were
nominated that year. The award was presented to our CEO
Steve Grooms at a ceremony in Charleston, South Carolina. This award came as we were celebrating 50 years of credit union service to our members.
As of today, we have three branches to serve our members in the Great Falls community: the
Malmstrom Branch is located
just outside the Base back gate, the Westside
Branch continues to be located on Central Ave W, and
our latest addition is a
Drive-thru branch located on 10th
Avenue across the street from Bison Ford. There are also branches in Conrad and Cut Bank rounding
out our Montana branches. In North Dakota there are two branches: the first is on the Grand Forks Air Force Base and the
other is Downtown Grand Forks, right in front of the Happy Host Motel.
"Making a Positive Difference In
Every Member's Life We Touch", 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union will be
opening a branch in Riverview and a branch on Malmstrom Air Force Base. These future plans are currently in the
initial planning phase and should be visible within the next few years.
